Copainter (https://www.copainter.ai/), a new AI lineart and coloring tool, by the infamous Radius5 (illustmimic.com).
Could this be a better direction for AI application? You did the lineart and color base, AI do the filtering, seems like a better approach than prompting the AI to generate the images.
Tested the painter with some of my sketches ranging from very messy sketches to cleaned line art.
The algorithm did pretty well in recognising the shapes, although some hiccup here and there. I would say this is a very well fine-tuned model. They did not mention which particular model they were using, but my guess will be SD. You can achieve similar results using ControlNet and LORA.
Auto lineart and coloring is not something new, however previously was mostly algorithm based which has an inconsistent output, thus less pickup by the industry. Incorporating AI into these application, on the other hand is a frontier and big leap of improvement. It saves a lot of time and guess work when AI can helps with the line works. Imagine those sketches sleeping in the WIP folder can finally come to a finish…
I did not try the Auto coloring, as the tool need a clean lineart + color base to put on the “filter”.
Of course, since most of the current AI application is originated/finetuned from the unethical parent model, there is always a debate whether it is ethical to use these AI related tools.
In my opinion, it is inevitable that AI will definitely comes into Artist workflow in 3-5 years time, it will finally come to the proportion of Artist vs AI, you can be a 100:0 or 90:10 artist, 10:90 AI images modifier or 0:100 AI prompter.
Furthermore, nowadays readers attention span is so short that majority might spend maybe few seconds when reading through your art post. Does grinding 1-2 hour on the lineart and 3-5 hours on colouring justify the ROI of your time?
